- At Desert Knolls we have a reading program called Accelerated Reading (AR). This program places each student in the right reading range. It means that the books are in the range where your child should be reading. What your child will need is PRACTICE. Practice is the way all children learn to read. Your child will be expected to read his/her book at least three times, maybe more. After the book is read a comprehension test is taken. You will see the results of these tests right away in a report called a TOPS report. On the report you will see the test score given to you in a percentage (100%, 90%, etc.) You can see how well your child did and if he/she will need to work on their reading and comprehension. I have had huge success with this program. I have seen the children have such a love for reading it is amazing.
